- For over 30 years, our primary mission has been to provide state-of-the art and evidenced-based cognitive behavioral therapy for a range of mood disorders and self-defeating behavior problems.
- We specialize in treatment programs for anxiety disorders consistent with the Treatments That Work (TM) series the leading authority in the dissemination of evidenced-based treatment.
- We offer supervision and consultation for students and mental health professionals interested in developing skills in cognitive behavioral therapy.
- We conduct psychological evaluations for residents in the Washington D.C. area who might have emotional, cognitive or physical disabilities.
About the Founder
The Washington Center for Cognitive Therapy was founded in 1982 by Vincent Greenwood, Ph.D., who continues to be its Executive Director.
Dr. Greenwood is a licensed psychologist. He received his doctoral degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed his post-doctoral residence at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, DC.
Dr. Greenwood has provided supervision and training in cognitive therapy for many mental health professionals and systems, such as the Arlington County Community Mental Health.
He was recruited by employee assistance professionals associated with Major League Baseball to provide psychological services to the Washington Nationals baseball team.
Dr. Greenwood has been associated with prestigious institutions throughout his career. He worked as a research associate and training leader at Johns Hopkins University and the National Institute of Health. He has served as therapist on National Institute of Mental Health sponsored studies designed to measure effectiveness of cognitive therapy on depression and social anxiety. He has the distinction of being one of a handful of therapists selected for a NIMH study to analyze how “expert and highly qualified therapists” help their clients change. He was the developer and Director of the Depression Treatment Program at the Center for Behavioral Medicine in Rockville, MD.

Dr. Greenwood has published articles on the application of cognitive therapy with a range of disorders including substance abuse, the chronically mentally ill, and medical difficulties exacerbated by stress. He is co-editor of the book, Cognitive Therapy: Application in Psychiatric and Medical Settings.
Dr. Greenwood is a founding member of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, Associate Fellow at the Albert Ellis Institute, and member of the American Psychological Association and other professional organizations. He received the Certificate of Recognition from the District of Columbia Psychological Association for his contributions to the local community.
